You Bought a New Used Car? Sweet! Now what!?!

Congratulations on your new used car! Owning a car is one of life’s greater pleasures because it’s our home away from home, and we take pride in our ride! A new used car is an oxymoron, but buying a new used car is a fabulous thing!

Now that you’ve taken the plunge, there are a few important things you need to do to make sure your purchase is a success.

13 Things To Do After Buying a New Used Car!

Here’s a checklist of what to do after buying a preowned car:

1. Transfer the Title and Register the Car

This is usually done at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You’ll need the title, bill of sale, proof of insurance, and a government-issued ID.

2. Get an Inspection

Even if you had the car inspected before you bought it, it’s a good idea to have it checked out again by a mechanic you trust. This will help you identify any potential problems and get them fixed before they cause major damage. In some states, like Texas, you’ll need the car to be inspected every year.

3. Get Car Insurance

This is essential to protect yourself in case of an accident. You can shop around for the best rate but be sure to get at least the minimum coverage required by your state.

4. Check for Existing Recalls

You can do this by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. If your car has any open recalls, you’ll want to get them fixed as soon as possible.

5. Find a Mechanic You Trust

Ask family members who they trust their cars with, or maybe check with some online reviews to make sure your new mechanic has a good record and good customer service.

Also, as you drive your car, pay attention to any strange noises, vibrations, or smells. These could be signs of a problem, so let your mechanic know.

6. Refresh the Interior By Taking It To Austin Area Color New

The car looked good enough for you to buy it, but now you can make your new used car look even newer by taking it to Color New. We can fix rips in your car seats, damaged or worn center consoles, dashboard and/or door panels. We can replace your sagging or stained headliner, and we can even take the yellow out of your headlights! Text the make and model of your car, along with pictures of what needs to be repaired, to us at (512) 810-3014 and we’ll text you back with a quote! It’s that easy!

7. Start a Maintenance Log

Write down the mileage and dates you get your car worked on, including oil changes, new tires, tune-ups, etc. This will help you keep track of when your car needs oil changes, tire rotations, and other services, and it will be very helpful for when you go to sell your car to someone else!

8. Read the Owner’s Manual

This will give you important information about your car’s maintenance schedule, features, and quirks. Draw a bath, pour some wine – and enjoy a great read!

9. Considering Buying an Extended Warranty

It might make sense for you to purchase an extended warranty to save yourself from large unexpected mechanical issues. Just make sure you shop around and do your due diligence on the company you purchase your extended warranty from.

10. Organize Your Paperwork

This includes the title, registration, insurance documents, and maintenance records. It’s a good idea to keep all this paperwork in a safe place, such as a fireproof safe or a file cabinet. Make copies of your registration and insurance policy/card for quick access in your glove compartment.

But don’t keep your title in the glove compartment! A thief would love to get his hands on your car and the title together to make his life easier.

11. Learn How To Operate Everything

Learn how to operate all the features, such as the radio, climate control, and power windows. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident driving your car.

12. Practice Changing a Tire

While you don’t have to actually change your tire, you’ll want to go through all the steps of changing a tire, like finding your car’s jack, pulling out and examining the spare tire and finding where your lug wrench is stored. You’ll be happy you went through these steps the first time you get a flat – especially if it’s raining out and you’re on the highway at night!

13. Get Essential Things For Your Car

Go to your auto parts store and grab some things for your car that will help you avoid trouble later. You’ll thank yourself later if you load your car up with things like a small flashlight, jumper cables, flares, rags, a can of Fix-a-Flat, umbrella and a first-aid kit.

Congratulations on your purchase! Now go out and enjoy the open road!

By following these steps, you can ensure that your used car purchase becomes a wise (and safe) investment. If you are in the Central Texas area, text us the make and model of your car, along with photos of what you need fixed, and we can give you a free quote! Or call us at (512) 810-3014!
